U.S. Chip Export Restrictions Rattle Samsung, Nvidia, and SK Hynix
South Korean chipmakers Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix faced stock declines following new U.S. restrictions on semiconductor equipment exports to China. The Biden administration revoked exemptions that previously allowed these firms to supply U.S. technology to their Chinese factories—a MOVE intensifying the AI rivalry between Washington and Beijing.
SK Hynix, a critical partner for Nvidia's AI chips, now confronts production challenges as approximately one-third of its output originates from Chinese facilities. The policy shift could benefit U.S.-based Micron Technology, which has demonstrated strong performance over the past year.
South Korea’s trade ministry emphasized the importance of maintaining stable operations at these Chinese plants for global semiconductor supply chains. The U.S. Commerce Department clarified it will not issue licenses for technology upgrades or capacity expansions at China-located facilities.
